Skin prep is in my opinion, the most essencial tool in order to achieve the flawless and natural base that we all yearn for. The NIGHTMARE for every make-up wearer is defenitely starting your day with a flawless base and ending the day off with your products having flaked off, dried down strangely or faded away. Trust me, we have all been there and no matter your skill level in make-up, you are bound to expierience this unfortunate reality one way or another. Essencially, skin prep is the process you undergo before you apply any make-up onto your skin. Skin prep is the most effective way to increase the longevity of your face products by giving them a clean and moisturised canvas to sit on.
The Ultimate Skin Routine:
Think of it this way, in order for your make-up to remain intact, you need a base that grips and holds your makeup while also curating to your skin type.
If you have more oily skin, oppt for a light moisuriser such as a water cream because though your skin is producing natural oils, this doesn't substitute for hydration and it is important to have this layer of moisture for your make-up to sit on.
If you have more dry skin, during your skin prep, oppt for products that are moisterising and will keep your skin hydrated throught the day. This can include a thick face cream such as the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream or a more affordable option such as the Weleda Skin Food Moisturiser which is a personal favorite of mine in the winter season where my skin is extra dry.
Then you should leave the moisturiser to absorb and 'marinate' on the skin so that it dries down and hydrates your skin on a deeper level.
Finally, use either a gripping primer and let it become tacky before applying your base products. Some of the best gripping primers include the Milk HydroGrip Primer and a drugstore alternative to this would be the Elf Power Grip Primer.
FINAL TIP:
If you are someone who is looking to get rid of enlarged pores and visible skin texture, it would also be beneficial to include a pore-filling primer in your routine. Though this may sound scary, it actually isn't clogging your pores but adding an aditional silicone layer to your skin in order to smooth any visible texture under your base. These primers can also be useful for more mature skin types to help conceal visible signs of aging :)
